Rohlig Suus Logistics, one of Poland’s largest logistics companies, has opened a new office in the Port of Koper, Slovenia.

The Koper port is a significant port on the Adriatic. Goods from among others Israel, as well as China, Japan and Korea arrive there. Freight arriving from Asia is then moved by road and rail to Western Europe.

– The new office, with its location in the region’s key port, substantially enhances our operating opportunities. The route via Koper means we can offer comprehensive intermodal connections to Southern and Central Europe, cutting transit times by up to 5 days. This represents an attractive solution for customers from Hungary, Romania, Czech Republic, Slovakia and even Austria and southern Germany, because it provides an alternative to the Hamburg port– said Tadeusz Chmielewski, President of the Board at Rohlig Suus Logistics.

The new office’s key job will be to offer comprehensive intermodal connections as an alternative route from the Far East to Central and Southern Europe. Presently, the Slovenian-based office handles FCL and LCL freight along with Europe-wide distribution services. It is also fully equipped to handle air cargo at the Ljubljana airport.

The port of Koper plays a substantial role in the „Connecting Europe Facility” Program which foresees the development of a Trans-European Transport Network (so-called TEN-T network) consisting of ten trans-European transportation corridors. The eleventh corridor, called Amber, connects the Slovenian port of Koper with Warsaw and the Belarus border. It’s thought to be responsible for 40% of container traffic in the North Adriatic and at present is the largest terminal in the region approaching cargo transshipment figures of 1 M TEU per year. According to Luka Koper, the port’s operator, EUR 25 million has been spent to develop the port’s facilities in the first nine months of 2019. As of end of September 2019, the port’s workforce was 1700 which represents a 40% rise on last year’s headcount.

The new office is the sixth international branch we’ve opened in the past two years, preceded by four new locations in the Czech Republic and one in Hungary.
